I came across this account of Emily Brontë, author of Wuthering Heights, being described as a ‘great navigator’ - and it totally captured my imagination. Here I connect the description made of Emily to our ambitions for all those who are part of LEARN 2050®.
In 1842, a master educator named Constantin Héger encountered a young student in Brussels who would leave him entirely spellbound. Her name was Emily Brontë.
Héger was a man of intense intellectual standards, yet when he spoke of Emily, his words overflowed with passion and admiration. He did not see passivity or a lack of capacity; he saw a titan of human agency:
"She should have been a man – a great navigator. Her powerful reason would have deduced new spheres of discovery from the knowledge of the old; and her strong imperious will would never have been daunted by opposition or difficulty, never have given way but with life. She had a head for logic, and a capability of argument unusual in a man and rarer indeed in a woman... impairing this gift was her stubborn tenacity of will which rendered her obtuse to all reasoning where her own wishes, or her own sense of right, was concerned."
