A New Academic Year

What does the start of a new school year mean for you?

Perhaps …

“Change” and the anxiety that comes with a new class, school, university, apprenticeship/ job

Home work” - an interruption to hobbies or relaxing

Effort” - being a learner and educator takes commitment and drive

Scheduling nightmares” - how to fit everything in!

Maybe the start of the school year is nothing more than a memory - part of a life journey.

For my 7 year old - going back to school meant an interruption to her summer routine and her hourly demand for food! She told me at the beginning of day 2 - that she would be “very happy not to go to school today”. All she had in her head were the negatives - most of which centred on the lack of choice and the fear that she wouldn’t be able to meet the expectations others had of her (teachers and peers).

We talked a little about some of the positives - of course friends but also the chance to learn something new. Although she was a little anxious about some of the more ‘formal’ learning that lay ahead - the chance to be in a new choir captured her imagination.

The problem was - she had not seen this as learning!

So this year we are launching -

It asks a simple question:

What does learning mean to you and your community?”

It is a chance to talk more about being a learner and what learning excites and motivates us.

We want the start of a school year to be all about the excitement that comes from being part of a range of new learning opportunities - providing experiences (in school and out) that help us all (learners, educators) discover more about who we are!
